When did Christians first believe that Jesus was God?

Films and books such as the Davinci Code would have us believe that the deity of Christ was not believed by the original Christians but was rather a later development.

But as we can see from the New Testament Scriptures, Christians have ALWAYS believed that Jesus is God:

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God."
--John 1:1
