Where did Christians get the idea that Jesus Christ is God?
Have Christians always believed this?
All over the internet today, you will find never ending attacks on the deity of Christ. Whether it is Muslims, atheists, skeptics, pagans or liberal theologians, there seems to be a more intense assault on the deity of Christ today than ever before.
However, the truth about the deity of Christ and the history behind it is not what is portrayed in the Davinci Code and other distorted books and movies that have been coming out the past few years.
The truth is that the historical Jesus always claimed to be God, and that Christians always believed that Jesus was God from the very earliest days of the church.....
Here are some of the scriptures where Jesus claimed to be God:
"I tell you the truth," Jesus answered, "before Abraham was born, I am!"
Compare the above scripture to Exodus 3:14....
God said to Moses, "I am who I am . This is what you are to say to the Israelites: 'I AM has sent me to you.' "
Here is another passage where Jesus claimed to be God:
"I and the Father are one."
Again the Jews picked up stones to stone him, 32but Jesus said to them, "I have shown you many great miracles from the Father. For which of these do you stone me?"
"We are not stoning you for any of these," replied the Jews, "but for blasphemy, because you, a mere man, claim to be God."
Jesus also accepted worship as God.
Thomas said to him, "My Lord and my God!"
Notice that Jesus did nothing to correct him.
In the scriptures, we see that whenever an angel is worshipped, the angel quickly corrects that person and tells that person not to do it, but Jesus always accepts the worship of men in the Scriptures.
Jesus also forgave sins, which is something only God can do:
Some men came, bringing to him a paralytic, carried by four of them. Since they could not get him to Jesus because of the crowd, they made an opening in the roof above Jesus and, after digging through it, lowered the mat the paralyzed man was lying on. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, "Son, your sins are forgiven." Now some teachers of the law were sitting there, thinking to themselves, "Why does this fellow talk like that? He's blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?"
The New Testament writers also clearly testified that they believed that Jesus is God:
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
So just who was "the Word"? It was Jesus.....
The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.
There are many other additional scriptures that show that the early Christians CLEARLY believed that Jesus is God:
while we wait for the blessed hope—the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ
2 Peter 1:1
Simon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who through the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ have received a faith as precious as ours
But about the Son he says,
"Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever,
and righteousness will be the scepter of your kingdom
The Son is the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.
For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form
Theirs are the patriarchs, and from them is traced the human ancestry of Christ, who is God over all, forever praised!
So we can clearly see that the testimony of the New Testament writers was that they believed that Jesus is God. In fact, according to Colossians 1:16, Jesus is your Creator:
For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him.
